About

Hi, thanks for stopping by. A bit about me: I've lived in Oklahoma for most of my life. I'm a social worker by trade and I picked up a camera in earnest in October 2011. If you poke around a bit, you can see I love to travel, I love street photography and living in a college town, I love people, and I love to shoot on football game days. But mostly, I love the challenge of shooting something every day.

My 365 projects* started by accident in 2010. The first one was merely an effort to keep my blog going, and most days I added written commentary to accompany the photos. The exercise was more about writing than pictures. But during that year of capturing images with my first-generation iPhone, I realized I loved photography. My husband talked me into taking a class and learning the craft for real, and I took his suggestion to heart. A camera and an intro to photography class arrived soon after. I've been shooting religiously ever since.

During my second project, I vowed I would do ten of them. I'm not sure how I arrived at ten in the beginning and not five, or even three, but I did. Since making that proclamation, I realized I'd been able to maintain my stamina with them, and the goal of ten projects morphed into fifteen with the option to extend another five. I still have ideas for themes and I still have the will to shoot daily. That being said, I take a break of at least 2 months between projects to emotionally regroup. I think of the projects as my creative process; putting in the work to hopefully improve upon my craft. Not every photo is gallery-worthy. Hell, most probably aren't even close. But the ritual of them forces me to think about photography daily, keeps my creative muscles in shape, and ensures I "see" photos all the time, even if I can't actually capture them. Collectively, they have become my life's passion project.

Some commonalities: With the exception of #2, all the projects have some kind of theme and self-imposed parameters to keep me focused. All the projects have "bookends", meaning I use the same subject on the first and last day.** The bookends are different for every project, but every project has them. All of my projects are 365 days, but my year rarely begins on January 1. In the beginning, the year didn't even start on the first day of a month.

My workhorse is a Pentax K1, but I occasionally shoot film and continue to use my iPhone as well. I also love cyanotype printing, and this process weaves in and out of my creative moods.

*For me, this means taking at least one photo every day for a year. I do not "bank" several images at once and parcel them out daily.

**I make a side-by-side first and last-day photo at the end of each project, so every completed album will have 366 photos. You can search for the tag "bookends" to see all of them.
